Warm Summer Days. . .

We've just had our first planning meeting as a new presidency, and are working on a great year of presenters and meetings for our St. George Chapter of UMTA.

Meetings will be held the second Tuesday of each month at noon.  Most meetings will be held at Caroline Jennings "centrally located" home near Dixie College.  Other locations will be announced when needed for that months meeting.

It should ab a great year of learning, growth, and fun friendships all wrapped into one!  If you know of other teachers who would like to benefit from this great association, be sure to invite them to a meeting!  They will be SO glad you did!!

We have been VERY blessed to have Caroline Jennings be our chapter president for the past two years.  She has done a REMARKABLE job!

(And it was very generous of her to open her home to us for our meetings and the luncheon!!)

MARCH'S CHAPTER MEETING

Our chapter meeting for March has been moved to Tuesday, March 20th (at noon), due to Spring Break.

There is a group of early childhood music teachers in town who are teaching the "Let's Play Music" curriculum.  It was developed by a BYU alum, and has spread through America and Canada.  It is similar to Kindermusik, Orff, Kodaly, etc.

As piano teachers it is valuable for us to understand this program because their students are our potential students once they finish the program!  They have a partnership program where they will recommend teachers once students have finished their program.  There are three steps to become an affiliate.
1. Read the packet available through email from Caroline Jennings
2. Attend a teacher presentation (our March meeting)
3. The last step is to go attend an actual class.

Becoming an affiliate is totally up to you, but by coming to our meeting you will be almost half done!

Come learn something new!

JAZZ UP YOUR TEACHING!!

Jerald Simon presented a great workshop on incorporating Jazz and improvising into our teaching curriculum.

His website has a wealth of information and several free downloads.  You might want to visit his website at Music Motivation

We learned how easy it is to teach a student a basic left-hand, three-note pattern, then to add right-hand 6th interval chords in any sequence, and the student gets an instant "new age" experience with music they "composed."

Jerald has a great talent and ability to improvise and change music into different styles that are engaging and inspiring to all ages, but which are especially attractive to youth.  His demonstrations and suggestions helped us see some new potential in our own studios.

All in attendance were given a CD and a jazz book to help us in our teaching.

It was a great 60 minutes!!  Thanks, Jerald!
